Silly Cow
By Ben Elton - Directed by Gerri Green

About the Author :- Ben Elton became a leading star of comedy in the 1980's. He first achieved fame when he co-wrote The Young Ones. In 1985 he teamed up with Richard Curtis and the result was the award-winning Blackadder. In addition to his successful TV writing career, Ben Elton has also writen a number of best selling novels and had successful, award winning, West End runs of his plays. Silly Cow was first presented in London at The Theatre Royal Haymarket, in 1991 with Dawn French playing the leading lady Doris.

About the Play :- A fast-moving comedy with a twist, its sharp action builds into a crecendo which ultimately ends in near-farce. The play lays bare the relationship between the actor and the critic, trust and revenge.

Doris is the tough, loud, rude and eccentric but popular bitchy queen of the tabloid press, who loves to trash actors and their work. A glittering venture into Television beckons and she's not going to let anything get in her way, not even the "silly cow", a spurned actress called Trudi, who is suing her for libel. Any skeletons she may have in her cupboard are, like her bondage gear, safely locked up - well that's what she thinks.

With vengeance the only thing on Trudi's mind Doris is heading for a fall. She needs a saviour but who will it be :-

Sweet and innocent Peggy her shy assistant who is always by her side ?
Tame, conservative Douglas her aging city type accountant ?
Way out boyfriend, Eduardo, a toy boy who can't leave the drugs of mass destruction alone ?
Pompous Sid, the prospective boss with a new job for her in Europe ?

The plot thickens, Doris becomes wrapped up in a hilarious turmoil of events. With one surprise arising after another, she realises that she doesn't know who her friends really are. If you know Ben's work and appreciate his flair for dialogue the you already know that you're in for a treat.
